AT&T Breach: 73 Million Impacted, Overview

Over the last weekend, it was revealed that a significant data breach impacted 73 million current and former AT&T customers, with personal information likely stolen and shared on the dark web. This breach is part of a series of cyberattacks AT&T has faced, with this incident's scale vastly outstripping a previous leak in January 2023. The compromised data includes Social Security numbers, passcodes, full names, email and mailing addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and AT&T account numbers, mainly from 2019 or earlier, excluding financial details or call history. In response, AT&T has initiated a thorough investigation, unable to pinpoint whether the breach originated within its network or through a vendor. The company has reset current customers' passcodes and is offering credit-monitoring services. Consumers affected by the breach are being notified via email or letter. To protect personal information, it's recommended to freeze credit reports, enroll in credit monitoring, and enable two-factor authentication on AT&T accounts. The Federal Trade Commission provides resources for setting up credit freezes and fraud alerts to guard against identity theft.
